Dell and AMD: Redefining Cool in the Data Center

Dell and AMD: Redefining Cool in the Data Center

You might be surprised to learn that one of the main challenges facing data centers today isn’t scalability or security. It’s energy. As servers become exponentially more powerful, they require even more power to run them. This at a time when energy costs are fluctuating and most enterprises are committed to reducing their energy usage through sustainable business practices. Fortunately, Dell Technologies has developed some really cool innovations around energy efficiency that make our PowerEdge servers featuring AMD’s fourth generation EPYC processors both more scalable and more sustainable than ever before.

Keeping Up with Rising Demands…without Catching Heat

There’s a lot more to Dell’s PowerEdge servers than just processors and storage drives. For example: air. And while you may not think about airflow when you think of a server chassis, at Dell we spend a lot of time thinking about how to optimize and improve airflow to keep energy costs low and processing performance at peak levels. Our unique Smart Cooling technology uses computational fluid dynamics to discover the optimal airflow configurations for our PowerEdge servers. Dell’s Smart Flow design, for example, enables PowerEdge servers to run at higher temperatures by increasing airflow in the server chassis, even as it reduces fan energy consumption by as much as 52%.

Improved airflow is only one aspect of our Smart Cooling initiative. We’ve also forged innovations in direct liquid and immersion cooling, which you can read more about here. And we continue to work with our partners to improve the sustainability and energy efficiency of our products through joint development initiatives—like the PowerEdge C6615 with AMD Siena, which maximizes density and air-cooling efficiency for data centers where footprint expansion is not an option.

Dell Delivers Energy Savings You Can See

Now, you may be thinking, “Those innovations sound impressive, but how do I know they’re actually saving me money and reducing energy consumption?” That’s where Dell’s OpenManage Power Manager comes into play. OpenManage Power Manager allows organizations to view and manage their energy consumption, calculate energy cost savings and track other performance metrics from their PowerEdge servers through an easy-to-navigate graphical user interface (GUI). Power Manager monitors server utilization, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy savings (based on local energy rates) and more to ensure that you’re getting the most from your PowerEdge servers while using the least amount of energy (known as power usage effectiveness or PUE).

Another tool for energy management is the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC). iDRAC works in conjunction with Dell Lifecycle Controller to help manage the lifecycle of Dell PowerEdge servers from deployment to retirement. It also provides telemetry data generated by PowerEdge sensors and controls, including:

◉ Real-time airflow consumption (in cubic feet per minute or CFM) with tools to remotely control airflow balancing at the rack and data center levels.

◉ Air temperature control from the inlet to exhaust.

◉ PCIe card inlet temperature and airflow.

◉ Exhaust temperature controls based on hot/cold aisle configurations or other considerations.

Achieving Sustainability at Scale

You can choose Dell PowerEdge servers for their legendary reliability and exceptional scalability. Many hyperscalers and enterprises do just that. But it’s nice to know that you don’t have to choose between doing what’s best for your data center and doing what’s best for the environment. With Dell PowerEdge servers featuring AMD EPYC processors, companies can increase their server performance per watt for scale workloads, reduce the amount of energy they use in their data centers, measure that energy usage in real time, automate energy-tracking policies such as power caps and proactively address energy issues before they present a problem. The complete PowerEdge portfolio for scale is available in multiple configurations and chassis heights with air-cooling and DLC options that enable significant energy savings and greater computational efficiency compared with previous server generations.

As more businesses look to balance scalability with sustainability, there’s never been a better time to consider Dell PowerEdge servers powered by AMD for your data center. PowerEdge servers with AMD EPYC processors deliver the consolidation opportunities and scalability you need to move forward, without getting burned by high energy costs. Now, how cool is that?

Dell EMC Study, Dell EMC Tutorial and Materials, Dell EMC Career, Dell EMC Preparation, Dell EMC Guides, Dell EMC Skills, Dell EMC Job
Given the importance of this award, I wanted to reflect on what got us to this moment in Dell EMC Isilon’s history.

Back in the early 2000s, media and entertainment companies began to require large-scale shared storage to securely hold and work with proliferating media formats: server ingested serial digital interface (SDI), new digital camera formats, graphics pulls, editorial, transcodes and playout.

To address that challenge, Isilon (a standalone company at the time) pioneered a network-attached storage (NAS) solution that’s allowed our customers to easily grow exponentially and tier content according to the business value. Because of the simplicity of managing a single namespace and the TCO of tiering data, Isilon enabled broadcast engineers and studio system administrators, previously focused on data wrangling and storage administration, the freedom to focus on media applications, accelerating workflows and developing business differentiating services.

Tackling Today and Tomorrow’s Media and Entertainment Workflows

Since 2003, over 2000 global organizations including broadcasters, post and VFX houses across 82 countries have invested in Dell EMC Isilon’s scale-out architecture to drive innovation in media workflows.

In the last three years alone, our media and entertainment customers have deployed over 1.5 exabytes of Isilon storage for media workflows and that investment continues to grow as live, episodic and feature datasets continue their phenomenal growth.

Today, media companies face a new set of challenges as content creators and distributors must determine how to take advantage of new technologies, that accelerate and simplify the creation of high-quality content in new resolutions and formats, as well as new viewing experiences for consumers, across traditional and new content distribution platforms. While at the same time, existing content needs to be digitized, archived, and stored, with proper tagging, to ensure quick retrieval and monetization. As these new challenges emerge, old ones still endure, with media organizations continuing to be under pressure to increase production quality, all while keeping costs low, and creating high returns for their owners and investors.

The Foundation of Media Workflows

Dell EMC Isilon is a key member of the broader Dell Technologies media and entertainment solution portfolio. Dell’s Precision workstations and displays are designed to empower creatives, Virtualized and Cloud Enabled solutions with VMware allow media companies to consolidate, run, manage, connect, and protect all your applications, Dell Networking enabling engineering teams to significantly reduce costs and empower IP broadcast workflows, Dell EMC PowerEdge servers continue to be a foundation of render farm and media application infrastructure, Dell Boomi is simplifying application integration and automation, and so much more.

Over the years, many of our customers have received Emmy® Awards, recognizing their fantastic content and compelling visual effects, developed using Isilon storage at the core of their media production workflow. We’re grateful that we can now add our name to this list as well.

We look forward to receiving this award in April at the 2020 NAB Show in Las Vegas. Speaking of which, if you’ll be in Vegas this April 18-22, please stop by our booth to see firsthand how Dell Technologies media and entertainment solutions can help you simplify, accelerate and cloud-enable your workflows, plus you’ll be able to take a picture with the Emmy® Award and celebrate this honor with us!

It has been a busy summer for the Dell EMC PowerProtect DD series appliances team and today, we are happy to announce the availability of the next version of DDOS: DDOS 7.7. DDOS is the intelligent data protection engine behind the DD series appliances that provides the agility, security, and reliability that our customers know and love. DDOS 7.7 delivers enhancements to our cloud offerings, updates to management of the appliances, improved performance in a variety of areas and a new way to consume DDOS.

Dell EMC Cloud Tier and PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition

When we introduced the DD series appliances to market, we made sure to have cloud as one of the central focuses of the offering. DD series appliances with Dell EMC Cloud Tier allows for native and cost-effective long-term retention of data in the cloud. In the past, Cloud Tier could support up to 2x the active capacity of a given DD model except for the DD9900. With the DD9900 already pushing the limits of scale, it was capped at 2PB of Cloud Tier capacity. Today, we are happy to announce that the DD9900 now supports up to 3PB of usable Cloud Tier capacity. With this update, the DD9900 now supports up to 4.5PB of usable capacity with Cloud Tier and up to 293PB of logical capacity with Cloud Tier.

As part of our quarterly DDOS updates, we have also added enhancements to PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE). DDVE supports up to 256TB DD instances in AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. With DDOS 7.7, DDVE in-cloud now supports the AWS EBS gp3 volumes, lowering the cost of running DDVE natively in cloud.

Ease of Use and Management

Prior to DDOS 7.7 improvements were made to the management and onboarding of DD series appliances at scale. With PowerProtect DD Management Center (DDMC), you can schedule DDOS upgrades and also run pre-checks on those systems for compatibility before the DDOS upgrade is initiated. Starting with DDOS 7.7, we now have an auto rollback function to the previous DDOS version in case the upgrade does not go through, allowing for continuous backup operations even if the upgrade does not complete. The auto rollback capability provides you peace of mind knowing that the DDOS upgrade process will not impact scheduled backups.

Improved Performance and Security

With ongoing development and refinement in any DDOS release, we always strive to deliver higher performance, and DDOS 7.7 is no exception. With DDOS 7.7, we have decreased the failover times of our high availability (HA) configured systems providing a more seamless transition when transferring the workload from one controller to the other. Another area of improvement is in the performance of our Instant Access and Instant Restore (IA/IR) function. When DD series appliances were introduced to market, we were able to claim up to 60K IOPS for the use case of IA/IR. When running DDOS 7.7, you can now take advantage of up to 100k IOPS* for Instant Access and Instant Restore use cases.

With security being paramount and customers wanting to store their data in an encrypted state, DDOS 7.7 also offers improved performance on systems that are taking advantage of data at rest encryption. DD series appliance customers that are taking advantage of encryption will now see little to no drop in performance when using Instant Access and Instant Restore with encrypted data.

On the topic of security, with DDOS 7.7 we are now supporting CipherTrust encryption key manager, formerly known as Next Generation KeySecure, an enterprise key management solution for encryption keys. This helps manage key lifecycle tasks ranging from key generation, key rotation, destruction, and supports the importing/exporting of encryption keys.

DDOS as a Subscription

Flexibility and choice are top of mind for many of our customers today. DD series appliances are available in a physical or software defined form factor and can be deployed on-prem or in the cloud. With DDOS 7.7, when you purchase a DD series appliance you can also purchase DDOS as a subscription. This allows for more flexibility from DD series appliances and minimizes the upfront costs. You can subscribe to DDOS in one, two, three, four, and five year plans and still get access to all the core features you know and love from DD series appliances such as DD Boost, DD Replicator, and DD Encryption.

DDOS 7.7 is packed with new features ranging from enhanced cloud support, increased performance, and the ability to purchase DDOS as a subscription.

Dell EMC PowerEdge Servers, Dell EMC Study Material, Dell EMC Preparation, Dell EMC Guides, Dell EMC Career, Dell EMC Prep

Dell Technologies is your innovation engine, offering distinctive servers for distinctive needs.

Imagine that you were in a data center ten years ago, and while looking at the servers, you recognized that they were essentially built on the same technologies.

Read More: DEE-1111: Dell EMC PowerMax and VMAX All Flash Solutions Expert

They all came with similar CPUs, similar memory, and similar drives. They even all came in similar form factors. Your server environments were largely homogeneous — and with the advent of virtualization, they became even more homogeneous because one virtual machine was essentially just like another virtual machine.

However, in today’s world, a homogeneous server environment is an obstacle to success.

Organizations and workloads require different technologies. Some services require massive amounts of storage, others need the fastest possible drive technologies. Some workloads require many CPUs, others require GPUs.

The days of every server living in a data center are in the past. Today’s workloads put servers closer to the end user than ever before, in environments previously impossible, and for purposes not even dreamed of ten years ago. As today’s organizations are pushing the envelope around innovation, they’re finding it necessary to build a heterogeneous server infrastructure, with different servers that offer different capabilities for different workloads.

They’re also finding it necessary to extract the maximum value out of every server through right-sizing and right-featuring their servers to avoid overprovisioning, adding unused capabilities, and spending money that isn’t necessary.

Dell Technologies understands these needs, and we have committed to building out the broadest and most relevant industry-standard server portfolio in our history. Today, we’re making six new differentiated servers globally available after announcing them in March. These six servers offer the latest 3rd Generation Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, giving organizations the latest performance and feature sets, but each is intended to meet specific requirements.

“The era of Intelligent everything is here and it brings new requirements for platforms that can manage the vast amounts of data being generated both at the edge and in the data center.” – said Matt Langman, General Manager, Data Platforms Group at Intel. “Intel developed its 3rd generation Xeon scalable processors to deliver performance flexibility and compute power to manage the deluge of data generated both in the data center and at the network edge, where more decisions are increasingly made.”

PowerEdge customers can add versatility and flexibility to their server ecosystems, better meeting emerging demands, optimizing value, and powering their innovation engines.

PowerEdge XR11 and XR12: purpose-built for edge and telecom

The PowerEdge XR11 and XR12 take all the advantages of Dell EMC server design in a new direction. These servers are ruggedized and built with distinctively shallow form factors, intended for challenging environments at the edge. The XR11 (single socket, 1U) and XR12 (single-socket, 2U) are NEBS and MIL-STD compliant servers that are ideal for telco, military, retail, restaurant, and other edge requirements. Built with 16in/400mm deep chassis, these servers offer:

◉ A wide range of processor speeds

◉ Optane Persistent Memory 200 support

◉ Up to 2 GPUs

◉ SAS, SATA and NVMe drives

◉ Reverse mounting and airflow

The XR11 and XR12 reduce the risk of server failures in challenging environments and work within space constrained environments without compromising essential capabilities or performance. If you need servers that can stand up to heat, cold, dust, vibrations and shocks with a hardened chassis and minimal footprint, these are the servers for you.

PowerEdge R650xs and R750xs: providing a powerful compute engine while balancing cost constraints

The PowerEdge R650xs and R750xs also take Dell Technologies advantages in a new direction. We designed these servers with a customer-driven feature-set optimization that helps organizations get the most value out of their scale-out, software defined infrastructures. The R650xs (dual-socket, 1U) and R750xs (dual-socket, 2U) give customers value-optimized platforms that are perfect for cloud-scale, general-purpose environments that don’t require GPUs. They offer:

◉ Up to 32 cores per socket, with PCIe 4.0

◉ Support for SAS, SATA, SSDs or NVMe drives

With an ideal selection of CPU, I/O and storage performance for customers growing data centers, these servers give organizations a distinctive way to maximize value without compromising performance.

PowerEdge R450 and R550: ideal for small to mid-size organizations

Then we turned our design work toward a different set of needs. The PowerEdge R450 (dual-socket, 1U) and R550 (dual-socket, 2U) are built for affordability and versatility. Ideally suited for light duty virtualization and general-purpose IT, these servers are an ideal fit for value-sensitive and small business customers who demand the latest generation of Intel processors and PCIe technology. These servers include:

◉ A mix of processors, up to 24 cores per socket, with PCIe 4.0

Dell EMC Study Material, Dell EMC Certification, Dell EMC Learning, Dell EMC Exam Prep, Dell EMC Prep, Dell EMC Career

How Dell EMC is Accelerating the Adoption of Tanzu with PowerProtect Data Manager

DevOps these days is focused on four key imperatives: to build, run, manage and protect. And with our partner VMware’s announcement of Tanzu updates this week ahead of VMworld we are excited to be in lockstep with the progress we have made in this highly innovative space by bringing together end-to-end management and data protection for all Kubernetes workloads under a singular control plane.

The run, build and manage journey for developers needs to also include protection of these ubiquitous workloads to guarantee reliability, efficiency and availability at a low cost. We say it repeatedly: the benefits that Dell EMC provides VMware infrastructures include the Enterprise-grade deduplication, compression and speed for all types of workloads.

Modern applications platforms can now be managed as cloud native organizations to bring their DevOps teams faster software release cycles. Not only that, they can do more with test/development cycles without interrupting their developers’ ongoing progress.

Essentially, VMware has introduced Kubernetes as its control plane — bringing the “Kubernetes experience” into the data center. This now bridges a community between the developers, the IT operators and the vAdmins. They can all begin to communicate on a level playing field as well as introduce protection policies via PowerProtect Data Manager across multiple technology stacks hosting these integrated workloads.

Dell EMC Study Material, Dell EMC Certification, Dell EMC Learning, Dell EMC Exam Prep, Dell EMC Prep, Dell EMC Career

These once disparate teams can now not only manage all their disperse applications comprised of containers and/or virtual machines (VMs); but in many cases can claim they are deploying the first and only Enterprise protection solution for VMs, applications and Kubernetes at once via central resources. In addition to accelerating the adoption of Tanzu, Dell EMC provides customers with the ease of worry-free migration for existing workloads to Kubernetes environments protected by their policies and self-service capabilities for DevOps teams. Faster testing, faster customer product to market is happening now.
